Science Links
Along with science, I am also very passionate about reading. I love books, and you guessed it… science-based books! One day, while I was walking through my local library, I started to wonder what books and resources I could find to help elementary students get interested in science, and that I could use to supplement lessons in the classroom. Science is often presented in a “fact” fashion, and not often in a “creative” way. I scoured the shelves to see what I could find.
The books I found covered a variety of subjects, ranging from animals to the solar system to plant life cycles. Yet, a lot of the books seemed only to be either in a young picture book format or an extremely detailed textbook type text. There did not seem to be many resources geared toward the “middle” ground, which is where most elementary school students fall. The formatting of the books also did not facilitate student interest or allow a teacher to read aloud to a class. Many of the books I found were overwhelmingly informational, a collection of experiments or had encyclopedia-like formatting. (The Magic School Bus series was one of the few exceptions.)
There has to be a more creative way to introduce these science topics to readers. We learn about many other subjects through stories- why not science? Below you can see pictures of a few books I have recently read and used. If you are also having difficulty finding interesting texts or resources for your children or students, here are a few resources to help broaden your love of science!
